Managing Occupational Risk
Did you know that more people are killed and injured while driving for work purposes than in all other occupational accidents put together? Occupational Road Risk is a very real risk. For example high mileage business drivers traveling in excess of 25,000 business miles per year are more likely to die at work than a construction worker.
Organisations are required to fulfill their 'duty of care' to manage road risk in the same way that legislation requires them to manage other occupational risks. Put simply the highway should be viewed as an extension of the workplace and the vehicle as a piece of machinery. Any journey that is outside of the normal commute is considered to be an 'at work' journey.
The new Corporate Manslaughter bill effective as of 8 April 2008 will make it easier to secure a prosecution and impose an unlimited fine where an organisation has failed to manage its road risks.
But it's not all bad news. It generally accepted that well trained drivers use less fuel, inflict less wear and tear on their vehicles and have less crashes. In short well trained drivers help to reduce the impact on the environment or each journey. The financial savings made can even help to improve an organisation's bottom line.
