Young Driver Of The Year 2009
The Young Driver of the Year competition 2009 culminated in a final event held on 11th September where the three finalists were asked to present their ideas to a panel including Glastonbury Festival Founder Michael Eavis, Wells MP David Heathcote-Amory, Mid Somerset Series Editor Philip Welch, 21 year old Bryan Sluman, one of the youngest drivers to achieve RoSPA Gold status and RoSPA Chief Examiner Bob Smalley.
The panel assessed the finalist’s creativity and attitude to the subject in hand and, with guidance from Bob Smalley who assessed their driving abilities, picked a winner.
Winner - Jamie Maidment, 22 of Shepton Mallet (£1000 prize)
Runner up - Camilla Shirley, 19 of Shepton Mallet (£200 prize)
Finalist - James Dadd, 21 of Bruton (£100 prize)
Winner of the draw to join the above on an advanced driver course - Matthew Lusby, 23 of Street.
The Young Driver of the Year 2009 competion was open to drivers aged 17 to 25 years of age on 1st June 2009 and living or studying in the area encompassing Shepton Mallet, Wells, Glastonbury, Street and Cheddar.
Entries were also accepted from young people who had not passed a driving test and were 15 to 25 years of age on 1st June 2009 to be placed in a prize draw to win a course of five driving lessons.

Stephen Sayer, 15 of Cheddar.
All non-driver entrants have been offered a free driving lesson on a buy-one-get-one-free basis.
